A Star on the Track and in the Classroom

By Leah Getsov

With college right around the corner, many students have come to a collective realization: it’s expensive. Funding a 4-year education could cost anywhere from $10,000 to $240,000. But a host of scholarships are designed to award students who have succeeded beyond what is expected of them.

One such scholarship is the Michigan High School Athletic Association’s Scholar-Athlete Award, which awards $1,000 to 32 high school seniors in the state of Michigan who have demonstrated leadership and success in both academics and varsity sports. Many seniors apply each year, so the competition is tough.

But senior Bethany Easom was one of few to make the cut. She and 24 other girls from around Michigan are Class A Finalists. But winning isn’t a new concept for Easom.

Easom moved to Saline from Keller, Texas as a freshman. Since moving here, she has played volleyball, softball, cross country and track. Easom says that sports are much more competitive in Texas. They are just something everyone puts his heart into.

Easom has continued this spirit of dedication, becoming a Track & Field captain for her senior year. Her athletic focus has centered on running.

“I really just love the atmosphere, being with such a great team. The people and the coaches are incredible and I love working alongside them, it makes the difficult running workouts much more enjoyable!” says Easom.

In track, Easom competes in women’s hurdles, sprints, and long-jump.

But not only do Scholar-Athlete Applicants have to have a dedication to sports, but an equal dedication to the classroom. They must have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.5/4.0. When juggling sports, academics, and extracurricular activities, this isn’t an easy task.

Easom says that managing time for all three plus a social life causes unwanted stress, that can sometimes lead to unfortunate sickness. (Especially when senioritis kicks in and everyone’s stuck thinking about their futures, which can be a hard thing to figure out.)

For Bethany, “I really don't know what I want to study in college. I'm really just trusting the Lord with my future; I know he will lead me wherever I need to be. If I had to choose, I would study Spanish, maybe be a part of World Vision or Compassion International and be involved with Spanish-speaking country relations and such in those organizations or ministry.”

The future comes with a lot of unknowns and we can only try our best and hope it leads to success. Saline High School is rooting for Bethany with not only the Scholar-Athlete Award, but also her athletic season and future studies.
