Saline Kids Have Got Talent
By Emily Jablonski and Emily Ferraro
On January 25, the Saline High School Student Council hosted its annual talent show. The show, along with helping local families by donating proceeds to Saline Area Social Services, allows high school students to “show people what they love [doing],” in the words of senior Maddy Johnson.
There were a total of fourteen acts this year being judged by Mrs. Kirkpatrick, Mrs. McCarger, and Mr. Heidtke. Wise-cracking Masters of the Ceremony, Tyler Eisemann and Trevor Ploucha, provided humor in between the acts.
Johnson, who looked perfectly at home on stage, said, “there aren’t very many opportunities to sing in front of an audience.” While many others joined her in taking the opportunity to sing everything from Florence & the Machine to Ted Thompson, there was a variety of acts.
Kevin Yi performed a standup comedy routine entitled “Welcome to My Flobby World,” earning him uproarious laughter from the audience. The rap duo Speech Therapy, consisting of Alex Kendig and Ryan Kirkpatrick, performed an original song called “Moment” which they concluded with an ironically charming bow.
Similarly, Meghana Shankar ended her skillful piano rendition of “Duet” by Mendelsson with a graceful bow. The last act of the evening was a rousing drum-off between Tommy Michaluk and Brad Roberts.
It was another piano player who took first place that night: Taylor Paxman, who played “All of Me” by John Schmidt, wowed the judges with his impressive mastery of the keys. Second place went to Caitlin Ashby, Alana Hollis, and Angel Schilke for their beautifully harmonized cover of Fleetwood Mac’s masterpiece “Landslide.” Third place went to Noelle Caprarese, who performed “Drops of Jupiter” by Train in a folksy, earnest voice, accompanied by her own guitar playing.
